HOTS memungkinkan anak mengembangkan pola pikir analitis dan kreatif, yang menjadi dasar bagi pemecahan masalah. Namun, banyak mahasiswa calon guru PAUD mengalami kesulitan dalam menerapkan HOTS dalam pembelajaran, disebabkan oleh kurangnya pemahaman terhadap strategi pengajaran eksploratif dan keterbatasan pengalaman dalam merancang aktivitas bermain berbasis HOTS. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis kebutuhan pembelajaran HOTS dalam bermain matematika bagi mahasiswa calon guru PAUD serta mengidentifikasi strategi efektif untuk meningkatkan keterampilan tersebut. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah survei dengan pendekatan kuantitatif, melibatkan 50 mahasiswa PGPAUD yang dipilih melalui purposive sampling. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa mayoritas mahasiswa mengalami kesulitan dalam mengembangkan ide kreatif, terutama dalam tugas individu yang membutuhkan pemikiran tingkat tinggi. Strategi pembelajaran berbasis proyek, seperti Problem-Based Learning dan flipped classroom, terbukti efektif dalam meningkatkan HOTS mahasiswa. Penelitian ini memberikan kontribusi terhadap peningkatan kualitas pendidikan guru PAUD dengan menawarkan pendekatan inovatif yang lebih efektif dalam mengembangkan keterampilan berpikir tingkat tinggi.
